CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — A University of Illinois astronomy professor will discuss one of the world’s newest and most powerful telescopes at Parkland College’s Staerkel Planetarium next month.

Dr. Gautham Narayan will present “Rubin Observatory: The Start of a Cosmic Movie” on Friday, April 3 at 7 p.m. The talk will focus on the newly operational Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile, which is scanning the entire southern sky every three nights and building the largest catalog of galaxies ever created.

The lecture is part of the James B. Kaler Science Lecture Series, named for longtime UIUC astronomer Jim Kaler. Following the talk, the planetarium will show “Messengers of Time and Space” at 8 p.m.

Tickets for the lecture are $2, or free for Friends of the Staerkel Planetarium. Planetarium show admission is $8 for adults and $7 for children, seniors and Parkland students. Tickets are available at tickets.parkland.edu.
