Teen identified after fatal shooting outside Champaign mall

CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — A 16-year-old has been identified after a fatal shooting outside Market Place Mall on Saturday evening, according to authorities.

The Champaign Police Department said officers responded to reports of a fight in the parking lot near Dick’s House of Sport around 6:14 p.m. During the altercation, at least one person fired a gun, striking the teenager.

Laurie Brauer identified the victim as 16-year-old Jaylen Bailey of Champaign.

First responders provided medical assistance at the scene before Bailey was transported to a nearby hospital. He was later pronounced dead at Carle Hospital in Urbana at 11:44 p.m., according to the coroner. An autopsy has been scheduled.

In a statement, mall officials called the incident “senseless” and said they were grateful for the quick response by security officers and police.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are asking anyone with information or video footage to contact the Champaign Police Department or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
