CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection to a February shooting that left a man seriously injured in Champaign.

According to the Champaign Police Department, officers responded around 10:53 p.m. on Feb. 18 to reports of gunfire on Stratford Drive. While en route, police received a call from a 26-year-old victim who had driven to the 1600 block of Sangamon Drive after being shot multiple times.

Officers provided emergency medical aid alongside the Champaign Fire Department before the man was taken to a hospital. Police say he is continuing to recover from potentially life-threatening injuries.

Investigators determined the shooting began in the 900 block of Stratford Drive, where the teen allegedly opened fire. The suspect was taken into custody March 19 during the execution of a search warrant in the 400 block of Briar Lane.

He is facing initial charges including aggravated battery with a firearm and attempted murder. A second juvenile, a 16-year-old from Champaign, was also arrested at the scene for unlawful possession of ammunition. Authorities say two firearms were recovered.

Because both suspects are minors, police say limited information will be released.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Champaign Police or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
