CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) – The Public Works Director has announced that the sidewalk snow and ice removal requirement is now in effect for the Downtown, Midtown, and Campustown areas. This comes after Champaign received over two inches of snow from Thursday evening through overnight.

Under the City’s Snow Removal Ordinance, property owners in these areas must clear snow and ice from their sidewalks within 24 hours of the Public Works Director’s declaration. The official period for compliance began at 9 a.m. on Friday, December 12, 2025, with sidewalks needing to be cleared by 9 a.m. on Saturday, December 13.

Sidewalks must be cleared to a minimum width of either 48 inches or the width of the sidewalk, whichever is smaller. Property owners with corner lots are also required to clear the ramps to ensure a continuous, accessible path for pedestrians across blocks. If sidewalks are not cleared in compliance with the ordinance, the City may take action to remove the snow at the property owner’s expense.

The City is reminding residents and businesses not to deposit snow onto City streets, as this can create dangerous obstacles for motorists. The City also encourages property owners along Safe Routes to School to prioritize clearing sidewalks for the safety of students and families.

A map of the affected areas and further details about the ordinance can be found on the City’s website at champaignil.gov/snow.
