CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — As homes begin to glow with lights and seasonal greenery, safety officials are reminding residents to decorate with care to ensure a fire-free holiday season. Each year, U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 832 home fires sparked by holiday decorations and another 145 ignited by Christmas trees, according to national estimates.

To reduce those risks, experts recommend choosing flame-resistant or flame-retardant decorations and keeping lit candles well away from anything that can burn. Flameless candles provide a safer alternative without sacrificing ambiance.

Homeowners are also urged to inspect string lights before use, replacing any with frayed wires, damaged sockets or loose bulb connections. Manufacturers’ guidelines on how many strands can be safely linked should be followed closely. Decorations should be kept clear of windows and doors to prevent both fire hazards and escape-route obstructions.

Finally, safety officials stress the importance of testing smoke alarms before hosting holiday gatherings. A quick check now, they note, could provide crucial early warning in an emergency—giving families and guests the time they need to escape safely.
