CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The U of I’s College of ACES has introduced Cherisse Smith as its new coordinator of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) education, who is leading efforts to deepen inclusive education across classrooms and workplaces.

Smith joined ACES’ Office of DEI in February 2025 and is already delivering workshops, lectures, and customized programming across departments. Her initiatives aim to help faculty, staff, and students engage more effectively with topics like identity, bias, cultural awareness, and equity in their work and learning environments.

Her role supports the college’s broader commitment to developing “inclusive intelligence,” one of four pillars of student development in ACES. This focus, championed by college leadership, seeks to equip students with the cultural competency and empathy needed to thrive in a global society.

With a background that includes leadership roles at the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center and the Principal’s Scholars Program, Smith brings a deep commitment to equity and a track record of designing inclusive, student-centered curricula.

In her new role, Smith is also launching “Soup & Stories,” a monthly program where community members share personal cultural experiences alongside meaningful meals. The initiative aims to spark open dialogue and build community through shared narratives.

Smith, a first-generation college graduate, says her lived experiences inform her passion for making education more inclusive and accessible. She continues to build programs that empower students and employees alike to foster deeper understanding and lasting change across the college.
