Illinois (Chambana Today) — Illinois has emerged as the nation’s tornado hotspot so far this year, according to preliminary data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). From January through the end of April, the state reported 119 tornadoes, more than double the totals in Mississippi (53) and Oklahoma (46), which tied for second place.

The numbers represent a dramatic departure from historical trends, with Illinois recording 99 tornadoes above the average for this four-month period. Meteorologists say the surge is unusual, as many states typically prone to tornado activity have fallen behind their normal seasonal counts.

AccuWeather experts note that a combination of atmospheric conditions, including increased storm activity and favorable wind patterns, may be contributing to Illinois’ spike in tornado reports. Officials urge residents to remain vigilant and review tornado safety plans as the spring season continues.

Experts are available for interviews and email responses to discuss the unusual tornado activity and what residents can expect in the coming months.
