From January through the end of April, the state reported 119 tornadoes, more than double the totals in Mississippi (53) and Oklahoma (46), which tied for second place.

The numbers represent a dramatic departure from historical trends, with Illinois recording 99 tornadoes above the average for this four-month period. Meteorologists say the surge is unusual, as many states typically prone to tornado activity have fallen behind their normal seasonal counts.
