CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced on Friday that overnight closures of westbound Interstate 74 between the I-57 (exit 179) interchange and the Duncan Road overpass on the west edge of Champaign are set for September 3-4.

The ramps from northbound I-57 to westbound I-74 and southbound I-57 to westbound I-74 will also be closed. Detours are posted utilizing I-57, I-72, and IL 47. The closures are necessary to replace a damaged beam on the Duncan Road overpass, and work on the beam will take place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. both days.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through the area. To avoid the work area, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and be alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide on 7,897 miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
