CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Cozy up, Champaign-Urbana — one of the community’s most beloved fall events is back, and it’s bigger than ever.

The Champaign Park District’s Flannel Fest returns to West Side Park on Saturday, October 25, bringing with it a full day of activities — from axe-wielding lumberjacks and live music to artisan shopping, food trucks, and the infamous hot pepper eating contest.

“Flannel Fest is what I like to call the ultimate Midwestern fall event,” said Tachel Brown, Marketing Manager for the Champaign Park District, during a recent interview on Focus with Callie Luttman. “We’ve taken everything people love about fall and packed it all into one day.”

Running from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the festival includes:

  • Live lumberjack shows

  • Local bands performing throughout the day

  • Over 20 artisan and vendor booths

  • Pumpkin smashing stations

  • Yard games and kids’ activities

  • Food trucks and local beer

  • Mustache & beard contests — real or homemade

One of the day’s most anticipated events is the hot pepper eating contest, where brave participants race to handle the heat. “It’s always a hit. We have people with what I call titanium mouths,” Brown joked.

Another fan favorite is the pumpkin smash zone, which doubles as a fun way to let off steam. “Get all those fall emotions out,” Brown said. “It’s just so satisfying.”

Flannel Fest began within the past five years, evolving from smaller seasonal gatherings across local parks. Since then, it’s become one of the Park District’s signature events, attracting thousands of attendees and drawing attention from beyond Champaign-Urbana. Attendees are encouraged to wear their coziest flannel, explore local vendors, and take advantage of downtown parking early, as the event uses mostly street parking.

But the fun doesn’t stop at 6 p.m. — The Virginia Theatre, just down the street, opens its doors that evening for a Rocky Horror Picture Show screening featuring a live shadow cast, costume contests, and free goodie bags for the first 100 guests.

Brown said Flannel Fest is more than just an event — it’s about connection. “There’s something for everyone, and it’s so community driven. From kids to couples to solo explorers, everyone finds something to enjoy.”

The Champaign Park District — which received the National Gold Medal Award in 2023 for excellence in parks and recreation — puts months of planning into events like Flannel Fest. Volunteer help is crucial, and Brown encourages anyone interested to sign up at volunteer.champaignparks.org.

“Come out, bring your appetite, wear your flannel, and plan to have a great time,” she said.
