CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — As Breast Cancer Awareness Month winds down, Champaign-Urbana health providers are reminding women that vigilance shouldn’t stop when October ends. Area doctors say early detection remains the most powerful tool in the fight against breast cancer — and that starts with knowing what warning signs to look for.

According to the World Cancer Research Fund, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. While many cases are detected early through routine screening, local physicians say recognizing subtle changes can make a critical difference.

Some early symptoms include a new lump or swelling in the breast, skin dimpling that resembles an orange peel, nipple pain or retraction, or unexplained discharge. Other signs may involve redness, thickened skin, or swollen lymph nodes near the collarbone or underarm. The American Cancer Society emphasizes that not all lumps are cancerous, but any new change should be evaluated promptly.
