CLINTON, IL (Chambana Today) — A six-week program designed to help people manage diabetes will be offered this spring in Clinton through a partnership between Community Care Systems Inc. and the University of Illinois Extension.

The Diabetes Self-Management Program will take place from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Thursdays, April 2 through May 7, at the DeWitt County Extension Office, 1160 Illinois Route 54, Suite B in Clinton.

Organizers say the program is designed to help people living with diabetes — as well as those caring for someone with the condition — learn practical tools to better manage daily health challenges.

About 1 in 10 adults in Illinois lives with diabetes, according to program organizers.

Participants in the six-part series will learn more about diabetes, set personal health goals and gain skills to help manage the condition. Topics will include diet, physical activity, medication management, stress management, working with health care providers and handling sick days.

“Whether it’s a new diagnosis or one a person has had for years, it’s worth knowing up-to-date information about diabetes care,” said Caitlin Mellendorf, a nutrition and wellness educator with University of Illinois Extension.

Mellendorf said the program aims to provide practical strategies that participants can apply in their daily lives.

The program is free, but advance registration is required by March 27.

To register, call Community Care Systems Inc. at 217-518-8010 or 309-445-7098. Textbooks and class materials will be provided, and participants may purchase the program book for $25 at the end of the course.

University of Illinois Extension provides equal opportunities in programs and employment. Individuals needing accommodations to participate may call 217-877-6042. Early requests are encouraged.
